Use easily visible window locks to deter thieves who will then be forced to break the gals and risk attracting attention. You can buy and install inexpensive, key-operated locks yourself. These should be fitted to all downstairs windows, especially those not visible from the street, and even relatively small windows. Do not leave keys in the window locks, but store them out of sight.

Louvre windows are particularly easy to enter as the slats can be removed from the frame. To increase security, glue the slats into place, fit special louvre locks, or simply replace them with fixed glass.

Alternatively, you can have security grilles fitted over vulnerable windows or do it yourself. There is a range of decorative wrought iron grilles available for sale.

Doors
The most important thing about doors is that they are strong and able to be properly secured.

Check that your doors and frames are constructed from strong, solid materials and are in good condition. If there are glass panels in your door, you should replace them with laminated glass, and fit all doors with mortise deadlocks, which should be engaged each time you leave the house, no matter how briefly.

All exterior doors should have strong bolts at the top and bottom. You may need to seek advice with respect to patio doors, which require special locks or a multi-locking system.

For extra protection, automatic deadlocks can keep thieves from escaping with your belongings – once it has been locked from the outside with a key, it cannot be opened from within.

Other simple precautions are chains, which allow you to talk to strangers who may knock at your door without letting them in, and a door viewer, so you can identify callers before opening the door.
